How to keep your real Christmas tree fresh and green
Caring for a real Christmas tree keeps it vibrant and holding its needles through the festive season.
1. Select a fresh tree
- Check needle retention: gently run your hand along a branch. If needles fall off easily, the tree may be dry. A fresh tree has flexible needles that stay attached.
- Assess weight: a heavier tree holds more moisture, which suggests it's fresh.
2. Prepare the tree
- Make a fresh cut: before setting up, saw about 2.5 cm off the base of the trunk to remove dried sap and help it take up water.
- Water straight away: put the tree in water immediately after the fresh cut so the end doesn't seal over with sap.
3. Position the tree
- Avoid heat: keep the tree away from heaters, fireplaces and direct sunlight, which dry it out faster.
- Use a stable stand: choose a sturdy stand that holds plenty of water and supports the tree's weight.
4. Water the tree
- Keep it topped up: make sure the stand is always full. A real Christmas tree can drink up to 2 litres of water a day.
- Plain water is fine: additives like sugar, aspirin or commercial preservatives are generally unnecessary.
5. Check it daily
- Water level: make sure the base of the trunk is always under water.
- Room temperature: a cooler room slows drying, ideally 16–18°C.
Environmental impact of NZ's real Christmas trees
Real Christmas trees offer some environmental benefits. While they grow, they absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen (Newshub). In New Zealand, Christmas tree farms often plant one to three seedlings for every tree harvested. The farms also provide habitat for wildlife, and the trees' roots help stabilise soil and protect water supplies (Real Christmas Trees & One Tree Planted).
Remember to consider the full impact, including transport and how the tree is disposed of.

The environmental case for reusing an artificial Christmas tree
Artificial Christmas trees, reused over many years, can reduce waste and conserve resources. An American Christmas Tree Association study suggests an artificial tree's impact falls below a real tree's after about five years of use (Discover Magazine). Repeated use offsets the emissions from making and shipping it, though the overall impact depends on the materials and how the tree is disposed of at the end of its life.
The same thinking works for everything under the tree:
- Reusable Christmas gift bags
- Reusable furoshiki gift wrap
- Sew-your-own gift bag kits
- Reusable Christmas crackers

Christmas tree disposal and removal in Auckland
Disposing of your Christmas tree properly matters. Here are some options:
- Compost in your garden bag: if you have a private garden bag or bin collection, check whether they take Christmas trees. Cutting the limbs off the trunk helps it break down faster, and a chipper is even better.
- Check with Christmas tree farms: some farms accept trees bought anywhere, for free, to use as mulch or compost.
- Ask your tree supplier: if you use a collection service, check they collect from inside your property (not the kerbside) and put the tree to good use, such as mulch or compost.
- Call your local transfer station: some take Christmas trees for a fee. Check opening hours and locations first.
- Choose a living tree instead: buy a potted tree you can plant in the garden afterwards. For a Kiwi Christmas, choose a pōhutukawa or another native, then plant it or donate it to a local community group.
